ChatGPT Ads Are in Europe. How Do You Measure Them?

Businesses in Poland can now buy ads in ChatGPT through a self-service manager. The new channel comes with an appealing premise: show your offer while someone is describing a problem and considering what to do next. Before spending your first zloty, however, you need an answer to a quieter question. How will you know whether the ad produced a result?

At SyncBooster, we work from a simple principle. Every marketing action should leave a measurable trace, because evidence lets you compare the result with the cost and make a better next decision. UTM parameters provide one such trace. They cannot reconstruct the entire customer journey, but they can recover an important part of it.

The key decision comes before the campaign setup: choose the customer action you want to measure. Creative, budget, and targeting become useful once you know whether success means a visit, booking, enquiry, purchase, or sales-qualified lead.

In our guide to measuring the work of a social media specialist or agency, we separated reach from business outcomes. We will apply the same discipline here and identify where reliable attribution ends.

ChatGPT ads are now available in Poland

A Polish business can currently open an account and buy campaigns in the self-service Ads Manager. OpenAI's official availability table lists Poland as available. Its European launch announcement was updated on 31 August 2026 to confirm self-service access across 31 markets.

An ad may appear below a ChatGPT response. It carries a sponsored label and is visually separate from the answer. According to OpenAI's current ads FAQ, ads can appear to users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu remain ad-free, and accounts belonging to people under 18 are excluded.

Those limits matter when estimating reach. The worldwide ChatGPT user count does not represent the audience a local campaign can reach. Eligibility also depends on the user's plan, age, country, conversation topic, and the match with a particular campaign.

Imagine a renovation company in Poznan. Its ad might appear when someone asks how to plan a small apartment renovation. Under OpenAI's explanation, the business will receive aggregate performance data rather than the person's private conversation.

How advertising in ChatGPT works

The system matches an ad to the intent of a conversation. It can consider the current context, landing page, headline, description, image, advertiser guidance, and campaign settings. This differs from building a conventional search campaign around a list of exact-match queries.

OpenAI explains that advertisers can supply contextual guidance about conversations, topics, or keywords, while that guidance does not guarantee delivery for a specific prompt. Broader ad personalisation based on other chats and ad history is not initially available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland.

Paid placement also remains separate from the model's organic answer. OpenAI states that its advertising system does not influence the answer and advertisers cannot alter or rank it. Sponsored presence and organic brand visibility therefore need their own measures.

The first independent study of this ad surface examined more than 3,000 ads from 186 advertisers, collected during the US pilot from February 2026. The researchers observed clear separation between ads and answers, along with frequent links to an advertiser's general destination instead of a specific product. That is useful evidence about an early format, though it is not a performance benchmark for a Polish business following the European expansion.

A furniture showroom can prepare separate routes for different intents: choosing a table for a small kitchen, furnishing a child's room, or comparing countertop materials. Each ad should lead to a page that continues that exact decision. Sending every visitor to a general homepage discards the useful context the conversation has already established.

Choose a measurable action before setting the budget

Write down one business action and how you will record it before launching a campaign. OpenAI's current campaign setup documentation gives accounts billed in Polish zloty a minimum daily budget of 65 PLN and lists three objectives: CPM, CPC, and oCPC.

Under OpenAI's budget rules, the daily budget is averaged over seven days, spend on one day can reach twice the selected amount, and total spend over seven days should remain within seven times that amount. A campaign set to the minimum can therefore produce different daily charges.

Choose the objective according to what you can observe:

Business and goalMeasurable actionSupporting signal
Beauty studio wants new appointmentsConfirmed bookingClick on "Book an appointment"
Restaurant promotes a seasonal menuReservation or code redemptionVisit to the menu page
Renovation company seeks projectsQualified enquirySubmitted quote form
Online shop promotes a product linePaid orderProduct added to cart
B2B service collects leadsSales-qualified lead in the CRMSubmitted demo form

A click can be useful during an initial landing-page test. It cannot, by itself, demonstrate that the channel generates sales. Cheap traffic with no completed action gives you a reason to inspect the offer, page, and intent match.

Our step-by-step social media strategy uses the same order: goal, measure, action, then publication. A new advertising platform does not change that logic.

A consistent UTM structure lets your analytics tool identify the source, buying model, campaign, and ad variant. OpenAI's creative setup instructions confirm that UTM parameters can be added to the destination URL.

For a campaign billed by click, you could begin with this structure:

utm_source=chatgpt
utm_medium=cpc
utm_campaign=autumn-2026
utm_content=card-a
  • utm_source identifies where the visit came from.
  • utm_medium describes how you bought the traffic, such as cpc or cpm.
  • utm_campaign groups variants that belong to one test.
  • utm_content distinguishes creatives, headlines, or landing pages.

Use lowercase names and agree on one separator. Autumn2026, autumn_26, and autumn-2026 will become three separate values in a report even if a person recognises them as one campaign.

Consider a renovation company testing two ads. Variant A opens a bathroom quote form, while variant B opens a guide to renovation budgets. Both links use the same utm_campaign and different utm_content values. After a week, the team can compare qualified enquiries from each context instead of judging the variants by clicks alone.

Google Analytics maps manually tagged values to source, medium, campaign, and ad-content dimensions, as described in its official tagging guide. You can build a consistently tagged destination URL without an account in the free SyncBooster tool.

Pixel, oppref, and UTM answer different questions

A fuller measurement setup connects the tagged visit with a recorded action. UTM parameters help identify where a session came from. The OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API can send an event such as a purchase, lead submission, or registration to Ads Manager.

OpenAI also appends its own oppref identifier to a clicked URL. Its conversion measurement documentation recommends preserving the identifier through redirects and later pages, then including it with a server-side event when available. Do not strip it while cleaning the address after arrival.

The systems may still report different totals. OpenAI lists page loading, redirects, consent choices, blockers, UTM handling, attribution windows, and time zones among the reasons ad clicks may not match sessions in an analytics platform.

An online shop might see more clicks in Ads Manager than sessions in its own report. Before treating the gap as a platform error, the owner should compare the same dates and time zone, test the ad link on a phone, inspect every redirect, and confirm that consent activates analytics as configured.

How to handle direct traffic you cannot attribute

Treat direct / none as a bucket of visits with no recognised source. Google Analytics explains that it can include visits without campaign information, traffic affected by redirects or URL shorteners, links in offline documents, manually entered addresses, and visits obscured by ad blockers.

A rise in direct after a campaign starts does not prove that the ads caused it. Some people might see an ad, remember the name, and return later without clicking. Others may have heard about the business through a referral, flyer, podcast, or earlier campaign. Those paths can look alike in session-level reporting.

For eligible accounts, Ads Manager may separately show one-day view-through conversions. OpenAI describes this as a supporting report and advises against adding it to the main conversion total or using it to calculate CPA. A gap remains after that window, and whenever the final action cannot be recorded.

You can reduce the unknown portion without claiming certainty you do not have:

  1. Keep a baseline. Compare the share of direct, enquiries, and sales with the period before the campaign.
  2. Use a dedicated page or code. A restaurant can use a campaign code, while a beauty studio can create a separate booking page.
  3. Measure the handoff to another system. If you do not control the booking calendar, record the outbound click and check whether that system preserves UTM parameters.
  4. Ask the customer. Add one "How did you hear about us?" field to a form or ask the question during a sales call.
  5. Leave part of the result unresolved. An honest report can separate attributed outcomes, supporting signals, and traffic with no known source.

A hair salon might use an external booking system that does not accept its tracking pixel. The salon can still record the booking click on its own site, preserve UTM values in the outgoing link, and compare customers' answers with the booking calendar once a month. This will not recover every journey, but it reveals the boundary of the available evidence.

How SyncBooster can help measure the campaign

SyncBooster can help you close the first measurement gap quickly: consistent destination links and a practical way to reuse what the test teaches you. You create the campaign in OpenAI Ads Manager, while the free UTM Generator builds a tagged URL with names you can later recognise in analytics.

Before launch, you can:

  • generate a separate destination URL for every creative or landing page,
  • document one convention for source, medium, campaign, and content,
  • give the SyncBooster assistant verified customer questions after the test and turn them into organic posts for your own channels.

An agency working with several Polish local businesses can reuse one naming template and change campaign and creative values according to a clear rule. A month later, its report can be filtered without guessing whether three similar labels refer to the same test.

If you are assembling a wider toolkit, see our free social media tools. The link generator works independently of whether the visit starts in ChatGPT, a newsletter, or a social post.

Checklist before launching ads in ChatGPT

This checklist gives a small business enough structure to learn from its first test. A local service company can review it with the people responsible for the website, advertising, and sales in one meeting.

  • Choose one business action the campaign should generate.
  • Check that your industry and landing page meet OpenAI's current advertising policies.
  • Build a page that answers the ad's intent instead of sending every visitor to the homepage.
  • Create a URL with utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, and utm_content.
  • Test whether UTM parameters and oppref survive every redirect.
  • Configure an event for the form, booking, purchase, or other outcome.
  • Record a baseline for sales, enquiries, and direct traffic.
  • Decide in advance when you will stop, change, or scale the campaign.
  • Separate attributed outcomes, supporting signals, and unresolved traffic in the report.

Frequently asked questions

These answers cover the decisions that tend to come up before a small business runs its first test.

Are ads in ChatGPT already available in Poland?

Yes. Poland is currently listed as an available country in the self-service Ads Manager. The platform is evolving quickly, so check OpenAI's official availability table again before committing a budget.

Can a paid ad make ChatGPT recommend my business in its answer?

OpenAI says paid ads are separate from answers and do not affect their content. A furniture showroom should measure clicks from a sponsored card separately from organic visits that follow links in answers.

Is a UTM parameter enough to measure sales?

A UTM parameter identifies a tagged visit. Measuring sales also requires an event on the website, sales-system data, or a connection between those layers. A renovation company needs to know which enquiries were accepted, because a form-submission count says nothing about the eventual project value.

Which UTM values should I use for an ad in ChatGPT?

A readable starting point for a click campaign is utm_source=chatgpt, utm_medium=cpc, a test name in utm_campaign, and the variant in utm_content. Consistency matters more than one particular label. Keep each value's meaning stable across campaigns.

Can I attribute an increase in direct traffic to ChatGPT?

The increase alone establishes correlation, not attribution. A dedicated code, a source question, or a controlled test can strengthen the evidence. Even then, keeping part of the result unattributed is often the most accurate choice.

The new channel reaches people while they are describing a need and weighing options. You will learn the most when you define the trace a customer's decision should leave before launch, then keep the same discipline when a result cannot be attributed.

Here is the open question for your own measurement process: what do you do with direct visits when you cannot control the metric for the final action? Do you leave them unresolved, ask customers about the source, build a model from your baseline, or use another method?
